THAT HYGGE LIFE

Hygge (hue-gah); the Danish term for celebrating life’s simplest pleasures. It encourages practitioners to make a ritual out of everyday activities to help bring you closer to friends, family, lovers, and to yourself.

From your morning cup of coffee to your evening meal, there are so many ways to bring more hygge into your life. Here’s how I do it.

When you make your morning coffee (or tea, or smoothie, or whatever), take your time and enjoy each part of the process. Grind your own beans, inhale the aroma, add some of your own spices to your concoction. Slowing down and living in the moment is one of the keys to hygge.

Stay cozy Winter weekends are the perfect time to do this. There is nothing I love more than lingering in bed a little bit longer under piles of cuddly pillows and blankets. Do yourself a favor and surround yourself in all things cozy. Light candles, get wrapped up in your favorite comforter, drink something warm, and wear your favorite sweater. Extra cozy points if you have a working fireplace.

Cook and bake all day Once during the weekend, I find a new recipe (or two or three!) and I cook/bake. In the oven, on the stove, or in the crock-pot; cooking is a great way to fill your home with warmth (and delicious smells to boot). For the holidays, find a new cookie recipe every weekend to try and share the results with your lover, friends, family, or bring some to work with you on Monday. Your coworkers will thank you!

Be in nature Reconnecting with mother earth is just as important in Hygge. On Sundays, my beau and I pile on the layers, grab a coffee, and start walking to the park, the beach, or wherever our hearts desire. Exploring new places or old favorites, surrounded by trees or the sound of the ocean, reminds me of all the beauty life has to offer.

How do you Hygge? Let me know in the comments.

❤ PJA
